A "hugely popular" beat bobby killed while cycling in the countryside.
Pc Guy Swatland died on the A6, near Great Glen.
Guy was Leicestershire's Beat Bobby of the Year in 2008.
Pc Swatland, who worked at Leicester's Welford Road police station, had been with the force for more than 15 years and was beat officer for Stoneygate and Knighton.
Police accident investigators have opened an inquiry into the circumstances of the crash.
"He was not only hugely popular with his colleagues, but was also well known, liked and truly influential in the community he served," he said.
"His death has come as a terrible shock and my thoughts are with his family and friends at this time."
Pc Harvey Watson, a colleague of Pc Swatland and his successor as Beat Bobby of the Year, said: "Guy was a dear friend and a fantastic colleague. We always had a lot of banter and he will be greatly missed at Welford Road.
"I know he will also be sadly missed in Stoneygate and Knighton.

my heart was filled with sorrow.
But when I walked through heaven's gates,
I felt so much at home.
When God looked down and smiled at me,
from His great golden throne,
He said, "This is eternity,
and all I've promised you".
Today for life on earth is past,
but here it starts anew.
I promise no tomorrow,
but today will always last,
and since each day's the same day,
there's no longing for the past.
But you have been so faithful,
so trusting and so true.
Though there were times you did some things,
you knew you shouldn't do.
But you have been forgiven
and now at last you're free.
So won't you take my hand
and share my life with me?
